Texture: A sound design plug-in that embraces layering sounds
Developer Devious Machines has launched Texture, a new plug-in that is part FX processor and part synth. It’s made for sound design by combining different layers of sounds and running them through filters and modulation. The plug-in ships with a library of over 340 sampled, granular and algorithmically generated sounds to synthesize new layers from, giving you multiple choices of complementary layers for any sound you work with.
You can tweak the Gate response, dial in the Attack, Hold and Decay envelopes, and adjust EQ for both the original sound and the Texture layer. You can also modulate each Texture’s properties with an LFO or envelope, while other controls include dry/wet mix, sidechain filtering, and Limiting. The newly synthesised layers track the dynamics of your sound.
Some of the creative possibilities offered by Texture include “glueing” your hi-hat transients by adding dynamic filtered noise and beefing up a kick drum with a low sine wave. So plenty of sound design guru techniques and tricks are there to explore and to be found. Definitely an interesting and odd one that probably takes a while to get acquainted with, but may pay off with some unique sounds in the long(ish) run.
Price and availability
Texture is available as a VST/AU/AAX effects plugin for PC (32/64-bit) and Mac (64-bit) systems. The introductory price is GBP 59.99 (regular GBP 79.99).
