The best microphones of 2022 for home recording
If you’re considering a new mic, we’ve picked out the best microphones of 2022. There have been some exciting new microphones released this year for different applications and at various price points.
As microphone technology improves, it’s constantly making high-quality recording solutions more accessible. While newer doesn’t necessarily mean better, by integrating hardware and software-driven features mics can offer increased versatility and convenience.
Choosing the best microphones of 2022
Whether you’re recording vocals and instruments or speech for your podcast, vlog, or streaming channel, there is a range of options that can help you get better results.
SE Electronics DynaCaster
The DynaCaster is a large-diaphragm dynamic mic for speech, vocals, guitar cabinet, or drums, with a rugged all-metal housing and an integrated DYNAMITE preamp. It’s also equipped with two EQ switches to optimize it for the source you’re working with.
In addition, you also get a detachable windshield, to offer even more protection from sibilance and plosives. What’s more, until January 8, you’ll get Celemony Melodyne 5 Essential with your purchase so act fast.
Universal Audio SD-1
The strangely familiar-looking SD-1 is a large-diaphragm dynamic mic that integrates with the Universal Audio Apollo range of audio interfaces. You can sweeten the source with the mic’s EQ switches and use the DSP channel strip presets within the software.
Each preset alters the frequency range to better suit the application. Overall it’s a quality dynamic at a reasonable price, but it will still require a preamp like a Cloudlifter to boost the gain to an optimal recording level.
Universal Audio SP-1
With the SP-1 you get a versatile matched stereo pair of small-diaphragm condensers for recording instruments. No matter which configuration use them in, the Apollo software integration allows EQ customization via the channel strip presets.
Stereo mics are an essential part of any recording setup, whether you’re recording drums, percussion, strings, brass, or acoustic guitar. The SP-1 provides a great recording tool with a convenient approach for Apollo users.
Lauten Audio LA-220 V2
If you’re looking for a large-diaphragm condenser, the LA-220 V2 delivers professional results without that high-end price tag. This recently updated version of the entry-level mic in the Lauten Audio range shines on vocals and amp cabs.
It can also handle high-SPL sources, so it will work wonders in overhead configurations. Overall, the LA-220 V2 is a versatile FET mic with a vintage-style output transformer and tone switches to darken or brighten sources.
Sony C-80
Sony is another manufacturer known throughout the industry for its extremely high-end tube condenser mics. The new C-80 combines elements from the well-known C-100 and C-800G microphones in a far more affordable package.
The dual-diaphragm cardioid design offers the same level of isolation, while still allowing the performer some room to move around in front of the mic. It will be great for use on vocals, speech, acoustic guitar, and amp cabinet.
