The MBOX makes a comeback with the Avid MBOX Studio
The Avid MBOX Studio is a new USB-C desktop mixer-style audio interface with a jaw-dropping list of features that make it perfect for a wide range of current-day recording situations.
It was only a matter of time before Avid turned its focus toward the creator market, so the return of the MBOX makes sense. Moreover, it carries on exactly where it left off, squarely in the semi-pro / prosumer audio sphere.
Key features of the Avid MBOX Studio
The MBOX Studio has many features, but it isn’t exactly compact or portable by any stretch of the imagination. At 9 x 11 inches (22,86 x 27,94 cm), it instantly becomes the centerpiece of your desk, whether you like it or not.
Although it works with any DAW system, it comes bundled with a software collection to nudge you in Avid‘s direction like Pro Tools Studio, MBOX Ignition Pack, Sibelius Artist, Celemony Melodyne 5 essential, and SoundFlow Cloud Avid Edition.
By far the most standout features are the switchable effects loops (Hi-Z/line level) and the variable impedance preamps and instrument inputs. With this level of connectivity, it broadens the scope of gear you can work with, from the range of mics to the different guitar amps and pedals, and other hardware you can incorporate into your DAW workflow.
In addition, the MBOX is equipped to run two sets of studio monitors, which is either novel or useful depending on what size room you’re working in. Overall, it offers a uniquely well-rounded set of features, but the price is beginning to reach into the realm of pro-grade audio interfaces so you really have to want it as a solution of sorts.
