The Sony WH-1000XM5 is now available for pre-order
With a complete redesign, the Sony WH-1000XM5 is sure to stay as popular as ever. We take a closer look at the fifth generation of Sony’s flagship noise
For starters, they now have a more streamlined design somewhat similar to the Airpods Max. However, unlike the previous model, the earpieces only rotate sideways and cannot fold inwards. At first glance, the new rounded shape with its matte finish gives the WH-1000XM5 a more ergonomic feel.
What’s different about the new Sony WH-1000XM5?
Inside, they are now equipped with two processing chips along with four microphones in each earpiece. According to Sony, this dramatically increases the effectiveness of the active noise cancelation.
Between the mid and high-frequency range, ANC performance is an improvement on the previous model, especially the isolation from ambient noise. The XM5’s 30mm drivers might be slightly smaller than the XM4, but they offer more high-frequency detail and a more natural overall sound.
As with the previous model, the XM5 supports SBC, AAC, and hi-res LDAC Bluetooth codecs. In addition, the Sony Voice Pickup system uses four beamforming mics and AI-assisted noise reduction for isolation.
Sony WH-1000XM5’s new features
Combined with the new wind noise reduction technology, you’ll be able to take calls virtually anywhere. Although the sound of your own voice may take some getting used to, the intelligibility and isolation of speech are both extremely high quality.
When listening with the ANC active, you’ll get 30 hours of playback or 40 hours without ANC. Meanwhile, a three-minute charge via USB Power Delivery will give you three whole hours of use, however, the adapter is not included.
The Sony WH-1000XM5 is also equipped with features like 360 Reality Audio, multipoint Bluetooth, Google Fast Pair and Windows Swift Pair support, and Adaptive Sound Control. In addition, there is a Speak-to-Chat mode that pauses music playback and allows you to immediately listen to your surrounding environment.
All this added tech does come at a price though, but you can pre-order the new XM5 headphones for $399 in both black and silver. Orders ship from May 20th.
