The unpredictable Swedish design mavericks at Teenage Engineering are back with another exciting offering. This time it comes in the form of a bright orange desktop ITX PC chassis known as the Computer-1. Like almost any new Teenage product, it had already sold out within the first few minutes, so you’ll have to sign up to get a notifier when they become available again. $195 might be a hefty price tag for a chassis, but when you consider its origin, it certainly could be worse. The Teenage Engineering Computer-1 is a DIY chassis kit from a boutique designer with enough hype to charge a good deal more for their products and collaborative designs, if you’re lucky enough to get your hands on them.

The design of the Teenage Engineering Computer-1

For starters, the Teenage Engineering Computer-1 is a flat-pack design chassis, which means bending the 1mm-thick aluminium panels yourself. Once fully assembled, the casing fits an SFX form factor PSU and a dual-slot GPU. However, thermal efficiency is likely to be reduced as the side panels have no grills and the graphics card slot is situated at the very top of the chassis. This is a DIY build and inspiring design ingenuity is very much on-brand for Teenage, so you can always modify your casing by perforating the side panels, adding additional internal fans, or simply laying the chassis on its side.

Originally driven by necessity, the Teenage Engineering Computer-1 began as a project back in 2014, when the team couldn’t find the right spec of desktop chassis to suit their needs. The prototype was held together by wooden plugs, and it took a few years of rehashing before they arrived at the current powder-coated aluminium model. Now that this tried and tested in-house design is finally available to the public, the Teenage promise is to continue making improvements – so there is surely hope for those with a phobia of the colour orange.
