Tone King’s new Gremlin 5W tube head packs in Blackface and Tweed-style tones
Small tube head with a massive vintage tone
The new Tone King Gremlin is a 5-Watt all-tube amp head from the USA with a super simple control layout and a built-in attenuator. If you are looking for an amp focussed on the Blackface or Tweed-style amp tone, then this little amp could be perfect for the job.
Tone King Gremlin Head
Tone King’s new Gremlin Head is powered by two 12AX7 preamp tubes and a single 5881 power tube. With a modest 5 Watts of power, this little head is aimed at players that need a pure valve tone without the ear-splitting volume of larger amps, and they have even added a built-in Ironman II attenuator so you can get good drive tones at reasonable volumes. Plus you have a reactive load, that reacts and feels just like your amp at any volume, so the whole design is aimed at great tone at any volume.
You can order the Tone King Gremlin head in either Black, Cream, Brown, Red or Turquoise finishes, all of which have matching front panels and either a white or off white fascia.
Super Simple Layout
This little tube head has both Rhythm and Lead channels, which are voiced for blackface and tweed tones. To make it as simple as pie, each channel has its own dedicated input labelled clearly, so just plug in and play. To access both channels, just plug in any standard A/B/Y footswitch and off you go. The Gremlin Head has two control knobs on the front panel Volume and Tone, so it really couldn’t be much simpler.
The perfect vintage-voiced mini amp head?
You may think that 5 Watts isn’t enough power. But it should keep up with most drummers without problems and you should be able to ise the new Tone King Gremlin Head for playing live. I suspect it will get a lot of use in the studio and at home, as having that Ironman II attenuator will shine for many players. At only 14lbs in weight and measuring 8″(L) x 15″(W) x 9.25″(H) you can easily take one to gigs or use it in the studio on sessions. The demo videos below gives a nice overview of the tones available. I can see this amp being well received by players that appreciate a good vintage-style amp tone.
RRP – USD 1095
