The u-he Tyrell N6 is a long-standing freeware favorite. After years of neglect, the developer has finally released a long-awaited update to bring it up to modern specs. Other freebies this week include an 8-voice soft synth for “contemplative sounds” and a 3D panner.

The u-he Tyrell N6 Gets an Update!
u-he Tyrell N6 began its life more than 15 years ago as a collaboration project by readers of the online magazine Amazona. The ultimate goal was to eventually turn it into a hardware synth, which never materialized. Tyrell N6, however, quickly became one of the most popular free software synths, especially since Urs Heckmann of u-he was in charge of programming the synth engine. As it shares some DNA with early versions of Diva (which is widely recognized as one of the most analog-sounding software synths), it sounds fabulous.
For the past 13 years or so, Tyrell N6 was exclusively distributed via Amazona and slowly fell into disrepair. Now, u-he has not only brought it back home, but also released a long-overdue update, which is now in public beta. Fantastic news!
While the update doesn’t add any groundbreaking new features, it does some much-needed housekeeping and brings the synth up to modern specs. Most importantly, Tyrell N6 now runs natively on Apple Silicon Macs. It also now supports the CLAP format (which u-he helped develop), alongside improved VST3 support. Other improvements include a modern preset browser, better GUI performance, soundset installation via drag&drop, and much more.
According to u-he, this beta is an intermediate step on the way to a more substantial update further down the road, which will also include a new user interface. As soon as the developer finds some spare time, Tyrell N6 fans will be in for a treat.
Tyrell N6 is available for macOS, Windows, and Linux in VST, VST3, AU, AAX, and CLAP formats.
NUSofting Psicogramma Key: Free Software Synth
NUSofting (maker of the famous EDP Wasp emulation daHornet) has released Psicogramma Key, an 8-voice freeware synth designed around the Psicogramma MFX multi-effects suite. According to the developer, Psicogramma Key is a “generator of contemplative sounds”, inviting you to get lost in sound design and effects.
The synth has a single oscillator with waveshaping and FM, as well as a noise generator. These feed into the Psicogramma MFX suite, which includes an octaver, an unconventional reverse delay, a flanger, and a tilt EQ. You also get a Vibrato control and a reverb diffuser.
Psicogramma Key is available for macOS and Windows in VST, VST3, and AU formats.
Nathan Blair HALO 3D Pan: Free Panning Plugin for Immersive Audio
HALO 3D Pan by Nathan Blair (the developer of the awesome Karp synthesizer) is a free binaural panning plugin for immersive audio. It uses pre-recorded binaural impulse responses to simulate the effect of a sound source moving in a 3D space.
You can position a sound source using the Azimuth, Elevation, Width, and Focus controls. The first three control the horizontal and vertical angles and stereo width, respectively, while Focus lets you fade between spatialized panning and a traditional stereo image. Neat! If you’d like to experiment with immersive 3D audio, this free or name-your-own-price plugin is a great starting point.
HALO 3D Pan is available for macOS and Windows in VST3 and AU formats.
