More Information

From the nineties metal of James Hetfield (Metallica) and Jerry Cantrell (Alice in Chains) to the grunge of Thurston Moore (Sonic Youth) and Pat Smear (Foo Fighters, Nirvana) to the modern guitar sounds of Matt Heafy (Trivium) or Mikael Akerfeldt (Opeth), few other modern amps have shaped rock and metal as much as the 5150. The Anti pedal lets you get those brutal high-gain sounds and less subtle distortion.

UAFX ANTI 1992: Emulation of the original “Block Letter” iteration

After the ’68 Lion and the trio Ruby, Woodrow, and Dream, UAFX ANTI 1992 continues this line of stomp modelers by UAFX. This emulation is a bit more intense, both visually and sonically. Universal Audio has emulated a “Block Letter” version of the Peavey 5150, which is a highly sought-after first-generation amp. This iteration came with the original Sylvania 6L6 power tubes, while later generations had Ruby 6L6 power tubes of Chinese design.

After the sales launch, the microphone manufacturer Electro-Voice sued against the amps logo’s (EVH) similarity with its own EV logo. So Peavey changed the logo to Eddie’s signature. This coincided with a change of the tubes. This is why the first generation of 5150s is called the block letter version. The Anti emulates this 120-watt beast and comes with three voicings: clean, crunch and lead.

You also get three cab+mic settings, including UA’s proprietary Dynamic Room Modeling technology, known from the Ox Amp. On the pedal, you can switch between the three models UK V30 (4×12 cab with Celestion V30s), CA V30 (4×12 cab also with Celestion V30s), and White 75 (4×12 cab with C75s).

You can also use the UAFX app to swap out three bonus cab emulations for the included ones: a 2×12 cab with a D65, a 4×12 cab with a C80, and a 4×12 Brown. Plus, the app comes with a bunch of presets from musicians in legendary bands like Nevermore, Arch Enemy, Tetrarch, and The Black Dahlia Murder.

Connectivity of the Anti
Connectivity of the Anti

In terms of connectivity, the UAFX Anti 1992 includes both a stereo pair of inputs and a stereo pair of outputs as well as a USB-C jack. MIDI I/O, unfortunately, is nowhere to be seen. As for the six knobs, there are pots for pre-gain (reso), presence (gate), and output in the upper row. The lower row is a 3-band EQ: low (overdrive), mid (OD tone) and high (OD level).

If you switch the 3-way switch in the middle to [ALT] mode, you’ll have access to the functions mentioned in brackets. As the Anti is meant to be driven with copious amounts of gain, the integrated noise gate comes in handy. The additional overdrive emulates a Tube Screamer, according to the manufacturer.
