After the Anti 5150, the new UAFX Enigmatic ’82 Overdrive brings the “D-Style” to Universal Audio’s world of stomp models. Admittedly, Dumble pedals are not exactly a new invention. But with the Anti and the Lion, Universal Audio has already made a name for itself in terms of the quality and realism of emulation.

UAFX Enigmatic ’82 Overdrive: Your Dumble door to ‘that’ sound

In early 2024, three UAFX pedals were leaked on a popular guitar forum via a US Patent Office entry: Mental, Enigmatic, and Knuckles. In the case of Mental, it turned out that Universal Audio decided to rename it shortly before its release, resulting in the UAFX Anti. As for the Enigmatic, many quickly proclaimed that it would be UA’s pedal version of the legendary Dumble amp.

They were right. Universal Audio is launching the new UAFX Enigmatic ’82 Overdrive Special Amp Pedal today. The press release calls it a “D-Style” emulation, but the fact that guitar legends like John Mayer, Stevie Ray Vaughan, Larry Carlton, Joe Bonamassa, and Carlos Santana are already using it is a pretty clear hint.

More Information

The UAFX Enigmatic ’82 Overdrive has a gorgeous mocha-brown finish and seems to work a lot like the Anti in its control elements. It’s got two footswitches (bypass and preset change), six knobs (three for EQ, plus volume, overdrive, and output), and three three-way switches. On the left one, you can switch between three cabinet emulations. In the middle, you set the mode (ALT for secondary functions, AMP to set the virtual amplifier and STORE to save presets). On the right, you can change its tonal character.

Build your own Dumble (virtually)

The UAFX Enigmatic ’82 Overdrive has nine cab emulations, including different microphone setups and three different tonalities: rock, jazz, and custom. While the first two are indications of Enimatic’s tonality being either more overdriven or rather clean, the third one lets you dial in your own Dumble sound. That’s where UA’s new app comes in. In it, you get various hidden tweaks, EQ settings, and amp-to-amp voicing modifications, just like the legendary original!
