UAFX Lion 68 Super Lead Amp with the EVH ‘Brown Sound’
Classic Marshall amp tones in a pedal
The Universal Audio UAFX Lion 68 Super Lead Amp offers three classic British amp voices in one compact pedal. With matching cabinets and simulated room spaces.
UAFX Lion 68 Super Lead Amp
This UAFX Lion 68 Super Lead Amp is the latest amp-in-a-pedal from Universal Audio and this one contains three British amp models.
Variac
All of them are Marshall in flavour, with a Super Lead, Super Bass and “Brown”. The later is based on an amp being controlled by a Variac to achieve the famous Eddie Van Halen’s Brown Sound.
Previous models included the Ruby ’63, Woodrow ’55 and Dream ’65.
Speaker Simulation
The pedal also features the Dynamic Speaker Modeling technology from popular Ox Amp Top Box *. This allows guitarists to control the speaker cabinets, plus the mic and room sounds, via the UAFX Control Bluetooth connected app.
- GB25: Late 60’s Marshall with vintage Celestion 25-watts “Greenbacks”
- GB30: Marshall “100” Birch Cab with Celestion 30-watts “Greenbacks”
- JB|GB: Two Celestion 25-watts “Greenbacks” / Two JBL D-120 Fs ; 1×12 Electro-Voice
As with previous incarnations of the amps in a pedal, the UAFX Mobile App can be used for foot switch adjustment, noise gate setting, preset recall and archiving, plus adding downloadable Artist presets.
Connections & Controls
Connectivity includes the aforementioned Bluetooth, plus a USB-C port for firmware updates and mono/stereo jack connectors.
The pedal’s controls on the front panel are self explanatory, they include Volume 1 and Volume 2, plus Output, Bass, Middle and Treble controls. Along with switches for the three amps and speaker cabinets options. In addition to the tone stack (bass, middle, treble), you will also find secondary controls for room, presence and boost accessible via these controls
Then you have two foot switches, one for choosing the preset, the other for switching the pedal on. As with all the other pedals in this series it uses a 9V centre negative power supply which is not included in the price.
Verdict
Again, this latest UAFX pedal, like the previous versions, looks like a winner and could be perfect for any guitarist looking for that British amp tone. I’m hoping really that the ‘Brown’ setting is decent, as that is the one a lot of players will want to check out.
