Having introduced the first Dante-equipped Apollo interface last year, Universal Audio has now expanded its capabilities with two new peripheral expanders for network audio systems.

With the e1x unison preamp, UA has created an extremely compact and lightweight external preamp module that is powered over ethernet and supports sample rates up to 96 kHz. The e1x also offers scalability, as the coupling lock underneath each unit allows you to connect them as one multichannel preamp module.

In addition, with the Dante controller app, there are routing management options, support for the AES67 format at 48 kHz, and you can use functions like Dante device lock. Meanwhile, Apollo x16D users can also configure routing via UAD Console. On one end, the e1x is equipped with an XLR combo input and an RJ45 port on the other, as well as a useful mic stand adapter.

The other new member of the E Series is the e2m, a Dante-compatible stereo monitor controller and headphone amplifier for network audio systems. Like the e1x, the e2m uses PoE and offers the same routing options and sample rate support. On the rear panel, there are stereo TRS I/O ports with the Dante connector port, while there are stereo jack and minijack headphone outputs on the front side.

The e2m control panel also provides mute switches for the line and headphone channels which is a nice touch. Overall, the E Series modules provide flexible options for network audio users, and they are welcome additions for x16D users.

Dante is just too damn expensive. If I’m spending that much on a single channel preamp, I can get two channels of Neve clone.
