SSL is renowned for its pro audio solutions in many different areas. So one could say that mic preamplifiers are their bread and butter, and we can have high expectations for the new Pure Drive series.

The first thing you’ll notice is that the features across the Quad and Octo are not completely replicated between the two models. The two units are aimed at slightly different applications, rather than simply providing a different channel count.

While the Quad provides more extensive controls on its front panel such as a variable high-pass filter, the Octo simply has a fixed high-pass filter across each of its eight inputs.

Per channel, both units give you 65 dB of gain with precision 31-step controls, 3 drive modes (Clean, Classic, and Asymmetric), and four impedance settings (400, 600, 1200, and 12000 ohms). This gives you the means to deal with a wide range of mics in recording or live situations.

There are also 4 numbered Hi-Z inputs conveniently positioned on the left of the front panel, making it easy to patch in guitars.

Meanwhile, the Pure Drive Series provides a considerable range of I/O options, including analogue outputs and insert I/O, so you can patch additional gear into your recording chain.

Connectivity on the digital side is extensive too, with AES/EBU outputs, ADAT outputs, and Wordclock, as the Pure Drive Quad and Octo offer expandability and can function as standalone AD converters as well as USB audio interfaces.

The use of D-Sub connectors also makes it easier to link the Pure Drive preamps with a patch bay to manage your routing more practically. Overall, the Pure Drive series is an impressive range of front-end units, both for studios and live sound applications.
