VHS Dreamwaves: nostalgic and vibey 80’s throwback rompler
If you are into ambient music and yearning for some nostalgic sounds, SampleScience has something right up your alley! The developer released VHS Dreamwaves – a rompler plug-in containing 40 sounds recorded onto VHS tape and further processed for maximum vibe.
Totaling 1.6GB of sounds with an “ambient vaporwave” aesthetic, the rompler is equipped with most of the controls you’d expect from a decent sampler. There is a single LFO for modulation with Depth, Rate, Low and High controls. Pan, Volume, Reverb and Cutoff (for a switchable HP or LP filter) are also available – along with an ADSR envelope, preamp coloration, and glide for keyboard performance. So you can delve into some sound design yourself from right within the rompler.
I like that VHS Dreamweaves is not the usual vaporwave affair. Rather, it presents a different take on the popular throwback genre. The developer describes the sounds within as “ghostly VHS tones, softly degraded keys, hypnagogic sound beds and wobbly synth leads.” So a good bit of ambience and atmosphere are to be extracted from this cool little rompler! Of course, rolling your own sounds can be just as fun as borrowing sounds from the rompler. But there are literally countless way to make the included sounds your own by throwing additional processing at them. Me, I’d love to record some stuff onto VHS someday, just for the kick of it!
Price
Only USD 24, which is what you’d pay for a larger sample pack these days.
Availability
Unfortunately, VHS Dreamwaves is incompatible with macOS Catalina and up. This is an obvious obstacle for getting the rompler in as many macOS users’ hands as possible. Windows compatibility, though, is pretty much ace with Windows 7 and later supported and the plug-in available in 32 and 64-bit VST/VST3 formats.
