Vox V863-CA Semi-Auto Wah: Three Modes
Vox V863-CA with Three Modes of Wah!
The new Vox V863-CA Semi-Auto Wah combines a classic manual wah functionality with two Auto/Pedal modes, offering versatility for all guitarists.
Vox V863-CA Semi-Auto Wah
Unlike traditional auto-wah pedals that often compromise tone, the V863-CA uses a unique design that directly drives the pedal’s inductor, preserving the iconic Vox wah sound. Vox states that this approach ensures authentic auto-wah effects that perfectly complement the pedal’s manual wah capabilities.
They have a lot of history with this effect, so players expect a certain level of quality from the wah-effect pedals they make. This new combination of old and new is certainly new ground for Vox, and it could be the perfect wah for players who find wah pedals awkward to use whilst playing the guitar.
Auto Wah Modes
They state that switching between manual wah control via the treadle and two innovative auto wah modes is simple.
- Envelope Generator Mode: Triggers the wah based on the attack of your signal, allowing for dynamic and expressive effects.
- Envelope Follower Mode: Reacts to your playing dynamics, creating smooth and synchronized wah effects.
Then Pedal Mode offers traditional manual wah control using the foot treadle, which is the standard way to use the effect.
Seamless Transitions
The Transition Time knob ensures smooth and controlled transitions between Auto and Manual modes, providing maximum flexibility during live performance. Other controls for the effect include a Polarity switch, Attack knob, Sens/Decay knob, and the aforementioned Mode switch.
Verdict
I have owned many wah pedals (currently, I own many wah pedals), and I have often found auto-wah effects hard to transition from manual modes with other brands. Hopefully, the Transition Time control on this new Vox pedal will work well. Some I have owned have nailed this feature, and others have not.
This new wah could be a great addition to your pedal setup if you want that classic Vox tone. The proof will be in how well it transitions between the three modes. I look forward to receiving owner feedback once it enters players’ hands.
It’s a nice addition to the Vox Wah family, and I love the color scheme they chose for this pedal. As a ‘self-confessed wah-addict,’ I will have to go and check this new one out myself this year!
