W.A. Production Orchid: four-way chorus on steroids for under 7 quid
W.A. Production has released Orchid, a versatile chorus plug-in. With four-way chorus processing and additional effects, Orchid promises to deliver the rich chorus sounds of the 80s and more. With an attractive introductory offer, it’s also a bargain.
W.A. Production Orchid
W.A. Production says that Orchid is inspired by the thick and wet sounds of the 80s. But the plug-in isn’t another reincarnation of the famed Juno chorus or another classic of that time. Instead, the developer has given Orchid some interesting features that can take the sound beyond the scope of a conventional chorus effect.
At its heart, it’s of course still a chorus. W.A. Production claims that by quadrupling the signal instead of just doubling it, Orchid delivers a thick and deep chorus effect. This is controlled by the standard dials for speed, depth, feedback and spread.
Additional effects
The additional knobs at the bottom of the user interface are where things get interesting. Shimmer adds up to two octaves above the original signal, which introduces harmonics and a slow phasing effect, the developer says. The Space dial adds reverb to each individual chorus layer, which also helps to glue things together. There’s also a delay control for delaying the chorus signal by up to 100 milliseconds, and high pass and low pass filters for shaping the wet portion of the signal.
A central mix dial lets you blend the chorus into the dry signal. Orchid also has a button for muting the dry signal entirely, which could be useful for monitoring or special effects. A large visual meter in the center of the GUI helps to keep track of what’s happening.
Orchid looks like an interesting new take on the classic chorus effect. During the introductory period, it’s available for less than 7 pounds or 8 US dollars, which makes it a bargain. The only thing that boggles my mind is the tag line “spread it around” – not the best advice in the middle of a pandemic …
Price and compatibility
W.A. Production Orchid is available from Pluginboutique*. Until August 4, 2020, the plug-in costs only USD 7.90 or GBP 6.41, which makes it a no-brainer. The regular price will be USD 39.90 / GBP 32.39.
The plug-in runs on macOS 10.7 or higher and Windows 7 or higher (32/64 bit) in VST, AU and AAX formats. The AAX version requires Pro Tools 11. A trial version is available.
