W/ – take the nowness and connect to a future temporal arrangement
Mannequins by Whimsical Raps is all about the poetry. They don’t build Eurorack modules, they emanate from a soul sown in a bed of homogenous modularisation. Their latest extension into the physical realm is W/, pronounced “With”, and is a tape inspired module for connecting passing moments beyond loops into compositional signposts.
W/ With
Once you get through the fabulously flowing language you can gather than W/ is a sampler of some description. Something like this:
W/ takes a nowness and returns it in a futurenow. Eight hours of audio sculpture to be recorded in and over and around. In fugues conversations fold, a fresh context for renewed identity.

It’s interesting reading the Facebook and Instagram comments about this module as various people try to get a handle on what it’s all about. Mannequin manuals are known for their beauty and wooliness. They describe concepts and ideals more than what the knobs and buttons do. It encourages you to go out there, experiment and think for yourself while leaving you slightly frustrated because you’d just like some basics covered.
What we know is that W/ is a sampler, a bit like the Make Noise Morphagene, but one that lets you navigate through up to 8 hours of material, loop, cue, overdub, layer and find your way back again. I don’t think it’s going to get any clearer than that until we see more videos of it in action. But with all Mannequin modules, it will reveal itself to be pretty special once you’ve spent the time.
