Walrus Audio 385 MK II Overdrive – More control & saturation
Inspired by the Bell and Howell Filmosound 385 projector
The Walrus Audio 385 MK II Overdrive is a newly updated version of the effect originally released back in 2016. An overdrive circuit derived from the rich overdriven tones of the Bell and Howell Filmosound 385 projector.
385 MK II Overdrive
This new Walrus Audio 385 MK II Overdrive pedal is like its predecessor based on the Bell and Howell Filmosound 385 projector.
The audio on the original Bell and Howell 385 was powered by dual 6V6 output valves, so many guitarists have modified them over the years as guitar amps.
What’s new?
The MKII of this overdrive pedal has added an A/B switch to toggle between two sets of volume and gain knobs. Allowing users to switch between presets to change volume and/or gain as required.
Plus it now has a new 385+ switch that slams the front end of the circuit for added high-gain saturation. These two new additions to the circuit could make the overdrive more versatile for many players.
The controls consist of Vol A and Vol B, plus a Treble control on the top row, then Gain A and Gain B, plus a Bass control on the bottom row.
Along with two footswitches to Bypass the effect and one to Switch between the A/B settings.
Two Finishes
The relaunched pedal is available in two finishes. There is a version with a textured black enclosure with an illustration of an original 385 Filmosound projector by David Hüttner in yellow and red ink.
Or a flat black enclosure with an illustration of an amp tube warm and ready to rock in cream ink by Josh Yosurack.
Verdict
It looks like a handy update and in theory, should make this overdrive more flexible for many guitarists when playing live or recording.
The overall overdrive tone is still based on the Bell and Howell Filmosound 385 projector, but now there is a touch more gain if required.
These two new updates could well make this pedal worth checking out for fans of the original 2016 model and its “cranked amp” like overdrive tones.
Pre-orders are open now and pedals are shipping on 28 October.
MSRP – USD 249/ EUR 279 / GBP 239
