Walrus Audio Fundamental Series

Last week, we published the news on a brand new, accessible line of effects pedals from Walrus Audio. Walrus Audio‘s president, Colt Westbrook announced that:

Cat’s out of the bag! Gotta love the internet; secrets were made to unveil :-). This is a leak I’m happy to comment on. I think what we’ve built is something a guitar player could get their hands on really early, but keep the spot on their board for a long time. Growing up playing guitar, there were several pedal lines that were part of my guitar journey. The original Danelectro pedals like Fab tone, Cool-Cat Chorus, Ibanez Soundtank series, Ibanez 10 Series, or even the ubiquitous Boss lineup we all had access to. I spent an inappropriate amount of time in front of an amp playing a DD3 after my paper route every day. I still have the ODR-1 I bought from Daddy-O’s in Stillwater, Oklahoma on my board today.  I wanted Walrus to be part of the guitar journey earlier but incorporate the audio fidelity and build quality that we’ve spent the last 12 years developing for our core line and Mako series. I wanted us to build something that would make it super easy for newer pedal users to dial in great sounds, but for them to also be something a professional would be happy taking with them on tour.

Well, now we have the full pricing, specs and official close-up images of the whole range. Let’s say that if you’re a guitarist or a synth player looking for quality pedals without breaking the bank, the Walrus Audio Fundamental Series could be just the ticket!

Essential Effects – Accessible Pricing

As mentioned last week, the Fundamental series all share the same enclosure and switch layout. Choices like this help streamline production efficiencies and as a result, the prices of these pedals are very competitive. JHS Pedals, for example, took a similar route with their 99$ Series 3 Pedals. Similarly, Drive, Distortion and Fuzz are priced at £95, with Tremolo, Chorus, Phaser, Delay and Reverb priced at £129

All the pedals in the Fundamental series are designed and assembled in the USA, so again, we can assume that a degree of overseas manufacturing is being used to keep prices down. This seems like a very accessible price point for anyone to get into the boutique pedal game. There are no fancy paint jobs, no exotic naming or features, just the essentials for bare tone. I like that approach very much!

For me the horizontal sliders are a case of ‘different for different’s sake’. OK in the studio, but live there’s something easy and intuitive about crouching down and making a small adjustment to a rotary control mid set or even mid song, but sliders will be more difficult to make small, accurate tweaks.

Perhaps vertical sliders might be slightly easier than horizontal ones, but then I remember the fiddly curse of gigging with the Boss GE-7 and GE-7B all too well.

Not for me – I’ll definitely be sticking to rotaries.

Yeah, that’s kind of a turn-off for me too.
But as I’m a big fan of Walrus Audio, I’ll pick a few up as I’m sure they’ll sound great.

They definitely look cooler than the very plain 3-series pedals. Intuitive controls, top jacks, and a tap tempo for the (reverse!) delay… I like it. Looking forward to demos.
