Walrus Audio Iron Horse Distortion: Version 3 of the classic distortion
An updated version of the classic LM308-based circuit
The new Iron Horse Distortion is the latest re-working of the LM308-based Iron Horse distortion from Walrus Audio. The boutique pedal builder has made some tweaks to the formula and a more pedalboard-friendly layout for this new V3.
Walrus Audio Iron Horse Distortion
Walrus Audio has updated the Iron Horse Distortion with a few subtle nuances to the original LM308 V2, as well as giving the pedal a more practical layout. These include top-mounted jacks for easier positioning on your pedalboard and a new soft relay true-bypass on/off.
No more volume drop
The company has also fixed the volume drop-off when the distortion knob is at minimum, which the previous incarnation suffered from.
Sweep your clipping
Walrus Audio also states that it has “re-imagined the hard clipping toggle as a blend style potentiometer, that allows you to blend between symmetrical silicon and diode clipping for a new variety of tones.” This is possibly the more interesting update for users and could really open up the flexibility of this Iron Horse, as you can now use the Si/LED (Silicon/LED) knob to sweep through the two clipping diodes.
Battle-ready stallion V3
Overall, it sounds like a neat little update to the classic distortion circuit and worth checking out if you don’t already own a previous incarnation. The new Iron Horse V3 comes in a gold finish with black ink, and features artwork of a battle-ready stallion cloaked in armour by illustrator David Hüttner. I’m not sure if this latest version would make me want to upgrade from the previous two incarnations. But I would certainly consider picking it up if I was looking to get my first one.
Halloween Edition
There is also a limited edition Halloween Iron Horse with hand-drawn art by Corinne Alexandra. It costs the same as the standard version, but you get the spooky artwork instead.
