There are signature models from leading session guitarist Brent Mason with PRS and Fender. But he has also been working with Wampler for quite some time, namely their pedal Hot Wired. The new Wampler ReWired takes the concept of two distortion flavors in one pedal to the next level.

Wampler ReWired: What happened so far

Brent Mason, Brent Mason… I’ve been guessing and googling to figure out who he is and what his sound is. Shania Twain, Willie Nelson, George Strait—that’s quite an impressive list of albums, most of them in a Nashville context, on which Mason has played in the last five decades. Brent has worked on over 1,000 (!) albums.

Mason’s style and sound have turned heads ever since he got on the scene. That has resulted in collaborations with Fender, PRS, and Wampler with signature models. For those in the know, the Wampler ReWired is not a new concept. Hot Wired and Hot Wired V2 already combined an overdrive and a distortion effect in one pedal.

Between the twangy rhythm guitar and piercing lead sounds, they offered a wide range of sounds, all within Mason’s cosmos. Their overdrive could also be blended with the dry signal using the Blend control for even more versatility.

Fat dial, order switch, and more I/O

The Wampler ReWired is a gentle evolution of the Hot Wired, even if it looks very different. Separate overdrive and distortion circuits are still at the core of it, though. Both can be activated separately via dedicated footswitches. Just like with Hot Wired, there are controls for Gain (input level), Level (output level), and Tone (high-pass/low-pass filter).

But what used to be a triple switch fattening the sound on Hot Wired V2 is now available as a continuous control for both distortion flavors. From the description, “fattening” here sounds a lot like bathtub EQ. In other words, the more you turn it up, the more the bass and treble are boosted. This is supposed to make it easier to adjust the sound for use with particularly large cabs or even tiny speakers.

Another new feature is the two-way switch called order. This allows you to switch the order of the two effects: Overdrive -> Distortion or Distortion -> Overdrive. That adds another level to the sonic versatility. This is topped off by the two inputs and outputs on the head side. These allow two completely separate effect paths to run through the pedal – perfect for loop switchers!
