Wampler Tumnus Germanium – Limited Run Klon-style overdrive
Brian Wampler has found some old original germanium diodes
The Wampler Tumnus Germanium is the latest Klon-style overdrive from Brian Wampler and uses a set of old original germanium diodes they discovered. Making this a limited run pedal and potentially an even closer clone of the original Klon pedal it is based on.
Tumnus Germanium
The Wampler Tumnus Germanium comes with three controls; Gain, Level, and Treble just like the previous versions, however, it is what is inside that sets this one apart. Brian Wampler has sourced a set of old germanium diodes which should be as close to the ones used in Bill Finnegan’s original Klon Centaur Overdrive circuit as possible.
Limited Edition
Whether you believe the hype about NOS germanium diodes or not, it does mean that the supply of these old components will limit the amount of these pedals that Wampler can build, thus making it a limited run overdrive pedal. Wampler states a 1000 pedals are all they can build for this run.
As ever the small footprint of this little silver and red pedal will require an external 9-volt, 19 mA power supply, and the circuit design uses the same bypass as the originals.
More Klon than before?
It could be a nice pedal to own if you are chasing that Klon-style overdrive, though there are so many Klon-style pedals out there already.
Having personally owned many original Klon pedals at the same time, I would like to say that they all sound a little different anyway, so you could be chasing your tail looking for the ultimate Klon tone.
So you might even prefer the regular gold V2 version. Currently, at the time of writing, there is no official demo video of the new one, so we can’t virtually compare the two.
