Warm Audio WA-87 R2: The Neumann U87 clone gets an update
Warm Audio has announced the WA-87 R2 condenser microphone. The popular clone of the famous Neumann U87 has been updated with new components and an improved output transformer. The manufacturer says that the new version gets even closer to the original.
Warm Audio WA-87 R2
Warm Audio’s WA-87 is one of the most popular inexpensive alternatives to a real U87. Released in 2016, it was the manufacturer’s first microphone. Warm Audio now says that they’ve learned “a bunch more” about microphones since the WA-87 came out, so it was time for an update.
According to Warm Audio, the new WA-87 R2 uses higher-quality components than its predecessor, including a NOS (new old stock) Fairchild transistor and high-bandwidth polystyrene and film capacitors. The improved Cinemag USA output transformer provides a slightly increased output level and improved frequency response, Warm Audio says.
Like its predecessor, the WA-87 R2 is a condenser microphone with three polar patterns(cardioid, omni and figure 8). There’s an 80 Hz high pass filter to get rid of low-frequency rumble, and a switchable -10 dB pad for recording loud sources.
While the WA-87 R2 obviously looks similar to its predecessor and the original, the manufacturer says that it now features a heavier and stronger body. Warm Audio also claims that the new rounded basket provides more space around the capsule, which yields “a more pleasing sonic signature”.
The Warm Audio WA-87 R2 is available in silver (nickel-plated) and black. The microphone comes in a wooden storage case and includes a hard mount and shock mount.
Price and availability
Warm Audio says that the WA-87 R2 will be available in September 2020. The MSRP is USD 599, which is the same as the original WA-87. That’s great news!
Warm Audio WA-12 MKII Black
On a side note, the manufacturer has also announced that the WA-12 MKII microphone preamplifier is now available in black. The circuitry is identical to the orange version. But you now have a choice of two finishes, depending on how much color you like in your rack.
The WA-12 MKII Black will be available in October for an MSRP of USD 469.
