I don’t smoke. Never have. I have zero personal identity associated with Zig-Zag rolling papers. And yet I so want one of these new Zig-Zag Record Players. Yes, Zig-Zag has made a portable turntable and it’s surprisingly full-featured. And even more surprisingly – affordable.
Spin Your Own
The Zig-Zag Record Player is a vintage-style suitcase turntable with an orange Tolex-ish wrap. I haven’t touched one so I don’t know if it’s real Tolex but at this price, I have my doubts. It’s got metal plates on all the corners plus a cute handle and latch. Just like the kind I had as a kid in the 1970s.
Inside we’ve got a three-speed turntable with 33 1/3, 45, and 78 RPM modes. It’s got built-in stereo speakers so you can enjoy your vinyl anywhere you go. You’re not limited to those speakers, though, as it also has stereo RCA outs and a headphone jack.
21st Century Touches
Although the vibe is definitely retro, the Zig-Zag Record Player has a few 21st-century touches as well. It’s got Bluetooth connectivity, meaning you can pair it with a compatible device and pipe over the sounds wirelessly. And, should you want to listen to music from a USB drive, it’s got USB in for playing over the speakers.
Unfortunately, it doesn’t seem to offer battery power, neither new-school lithium-ion or old-school dry cell. So if you’re thinking of using it to audition records when crate digging, you’ll have to ask the shop owner if you can use their wall socket.
Price and Availability
The Zig-Zag Record Player is only $99 directly from the paper company. However, it looks like it’s already sold out. Hopefully, Zig-Zag will do another run, as the first batch went up in smoke a little too quickly.
