zplane Peel Stems: Real-time Stem Separation in your DAW

The new plugin is based on the same technology as the original Peel spectral isolator EQ released a few years ago (find out more about it in our original news post below). Unlike Peel, however, the new zplane Peel Stems supports real-time stem separation. This opens up a whole new way of working with audio files – especially complete mixes.

How the times have changed. Extracting individual elements from a complete mix used to be downright impossible. With zplane Peel Stems, you can now do just that – in real time! For example, Peel Stems lets you remove vocals or instruments, change the balance of various elements, isolate and process stems, or even create a new remix.

The Soundfield display gives you an overview of the various stems in your mix and tells you what you can isolate and extract. The plugin separates mixes into four stems: Drums, bass, vocals, and “other”. Drums, for example, can then be edited down further using clever routing, which lets you process things like the snare or kick drum individually.

In addition to this, Peel Stems offers all features of the original Peel, including the Focus EQ.

Zplane PEEL – isolate and EQ instruments from a mix

[Original post by Lyubomir Dobrev, 19 December 2020] PEEL greets you with a spectral visualizer where the contents of your track or mix are visualized and made distinct. From here, you get to click and drag around the frequency range representing the instrument or vocal you are targeting. Once you home in, the contents of your selection can be isolated from the whole and you can start EQ-ing.

More Information

This way, PEEL can effectively isolate instrument and vocal tracks from a mix right within your DAW. By soloing, muting, panning, or routing the isolated audio to another track for recording or processing, you can take out exactly what you need from a stereo recording and manipulate it as you wish.

For example, you can isolate the snare from a drum track and treat it separately from the kit. This kind of trickery used to require careful frequency separation or investing in a spectral processing suite like those from iZotope and Acon Digital. Now, it’s become part of an affordable EQ plug-in.

Judging by the demonstrations, the tech works just as advertised. However, it is not possible to send audio from PEEL to another track inside Cakewalk, Logic Pro, and Studio One.

Price and availability

The plug-in costs EUR 39 and is available for Windows and Mac computers in VST, VST3, AU, and AAX formats. A free demo version can be downloaded as well.

Note: We do not recommend purchasing the original Peel plugin anymore, as all features are also included in the new Peel Stems (see above).
