The flagship SPL Phonitor 3 high-end headphone preamp is more sophisticated than ever, with some intuitive interface tweaks in the design.

The Phonitor is the flagship headphone monitoring amplifier from the renowned German manufacturer, SPL. Using SPL’s 120V DC audio rail technology, it continues to offer a premium solution for listening, mixing, and mastering.

Overall, the Phonitor 3 offers the same console quality signal path with a few adjustments that make it even more of a joy to use. The capability to choose between three input sources remains. However, the third channel’s inputs have now been replaced with XLR inputs rather than RCA.

Furthermore, the front panel’s console has been completely redesigned with a more logical layout. For starters, the source selector switch has been replaced with a knob. Meanwhile, the Laterality control joins the Phonitor Matrix controls on the left.

In addition, all the various function switches have been centralized on the right of the front panel. This includes a new L/R swap function, which is very useful in sound design and effects sync for video. Here, you can quickly match samples up without having to check them in your DAW.

The Phonitor also offers Mid-Side monitoring capabilities. With the help of the mono/stereo and L/R phase switches, you can listen to the individual Mid and Side channels to hear precise details within a group of signals.

With the Phonitor matrix and its crossfeed feature, the Phonitor 3 remains one of the most powerful tools for mixing and mastering on headphones. Using headphones, you recreate the stereo image of your studio monitors with amazing accuracy, making it easier for mixes to translate onto other playback systems.
